Welcome

The Institute of Environmental Sciences was founded in 1982 as an extension and restructuring of the Environmental Research Group established in the School of Engineering during the late 1970s. Starting with three graduate students in the fall semester of the 1984/1985 academic year, the Institute had its first graduates in 1986, and since then 208 M.Sc. and 46 Ph.D degrees were awarded in the fields of Environmental Sciences and Environmental Technology. The Institute of Environmental Sciences of Bogaziçi University is the first environmental research organization in Turkey established by law (Turkish Official Gazette, No:18124, 3 August 1983). The Institute academic staff consists of 16 full time faculty members, 18 research assistants and 5 expert technical personnel.

Unlike environmental engineering departments in many other Turkish universities, the Institute of Environmental Sciences plays a unique role, comprising researchers from a broad background, i.e. not only from environmental engineering, but also from chemical, civil, and industrial engineering, chemistry, biophysics and biology. The research topics of the Institute are not only on environmental engineering (like all other environmental engineering departments) but also on pure environmental sciences, ecology, and social environmental sciences. Since 1994, more than 260 research articles have been published by the Institute members in journals covered by Science Citation Index-Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index . These articles have received 2800 citations (end of 2008). Institıte h-index is 28.
